Keep Your Home Secure With These Top Tips

Home burglaries are occurring at a disturbing rate and homeowners are being victimized both in cities and in rural areas. These are a few tips that will help you protect your home and the items inside of it.

These are several tips to prevent you from being the victim of a thief

  1. Have a home security system installed and make sure the installer conceals it very well. Professional thieves will look for wiring and they have the ability to disable even the best home security system if they know it is there.
  2. Make it look like you are in your house all the time. Use several timers with multiple on/off settings. Have a TV on a timer.
  3. If you will be away for several days or over a week, call on a family member you trust or neighbor to watch your home.
  4. Be careful about telling others you'll be gone -- you never know who might get that information and use it against you.
  5. Store anything of value in a good safe in your house or in the deposit boxes at your bank.
  6. Have the locks or tumblers changed when you move into a new home or if you lose a house key that can be traced to your home.
  7. Put a cage or an alarm on your central air conditioner. These are being taken in record numbers because they have a lot of of valuable copper that can be sold for profit.
  8. If you have a faulty alarm on your home, air conditioner or vehicle that goes off when it should not, have it repaired and then let your neighbors know that you have had it repaired. False alarms cause neighbors to ignore the alarm, rendering them ineffective when they go off legitimately.
  9. Do not let a tree or overgrown shrubs block windows on the house. They offer thieves cover as they attempt to break in.
  10. Don't let strangers into your home. If someone arrives at your door and asks to use your phone, keep doors locked and offer to make a call for them.

Hopefully, these tips will help in preventing a lot of the burglaries that are occurring every day in your neighborhood. Put these in motion and a thief will probably look somewhere else to find an easier target.
